The Inter-American Climate Change Action Plan 2023-2030, recently adopted at the Fourth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on Sustainable Development, underscores the need to build resilient and sustainable communities to withstand disasters. By prioritizing resilience policies, the plan aims to create a future that is both robust and sustainable.
The Disaster Risk Management (DRM) section has several key objectives:
-Strengthen national and local resilience capacities by incorporating nature-based and ecosystem-based approaches into multi-hazard risk management strategies.
-Enhance collaborative efforts to exchange expertise and best practices in national disaster risk management strategies and policies.
-Incorporate the latest research into evidence-based policies, enabling policymakers to take proactive measures that protect infrastructure and communities.
-Partner with academia and centers of excellence to enhance data analysis capabilities, providing policymakers with detailed, region-specific insights to promote innovation and continuous improvement.
-Establish initiatives focused on using scientific knowledge for informed decision-making, improving disaster risk management, and building resilience through robust dialogue and comprehensive frameworks.
-Utilize the Western Hemisphere Natural Disasters database as a foundation for informed decision-making, helping Member States anticipate, mitigate, and adapt to climate-induced challenges.
