Human-induced climate change is impacting ecosystems and communities worldwide, causing issues like drought, which harms food and health, and flooding, which spreads disease and damages infrastructure. These impacts increase mortality and reduce productivity, disproportionately affecting underserved groups. Immediate action is needed to mitigate these effects. The Climate Change Section supports Member States in adapting to and managing the increasing risks associated with natural disasters by integrating Risk Management into development policy and planning across all sectors and levels of government.
In October 2023, member states met in the Bahamas and approved the Inter-American Climate Change Action Plan 2023-2030 and the Nassau Declaration. This plan emphasizes concrete actions for mitigating and adapting to climate change impacts across the Americas, advocating for a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach. It addresses threats like rising temperatures, altered precipitation, and extreme weather events, impacting agriculture, water, energy, and infrastructure.
Key actions include:
- Regional Hub on Climate Finance: Providing technical assistance, capacity building, and financing strategies.
- Support for Regional Projects: Implementing climate action projects and engaging with multilateral financing entities.
- Climate Smart Skills Training: Offering training and scholarships in climate-smart skills.
- Promotion of Circular Economy: Encouraging sustainable consumption and production.
- Knowledge Exchange: Reducing financing costs and improving resource mobilization.
- Regional Dialogue on Sargassum: Addressing the Sargassum issue with technical and financial support.
The plan aims to build resilience and sustainability, with a focus on vulnerable small island states in the Caribbean.
