The PROSAT program develops satellite systems and Earth observation applications to address critical challenges in Argentina and the region. By leveraging spatial information, PROSAT enhances decision-making, improves socioeconomic conditions, and supports sustainable development.

Executed by the Department of Sustainable Development (DSD) under the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI) of the OAS, the program strengthens forecasting systems for floods and droughts, promotes sustainable natural resource management, and advances disaster prevention efforts.

A key collaboration between the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS) and the National Commission for Space Activities of Argentina (CONAE) further amplifies PROSAT’s impact, ensuring its contributions to knowledge management and regional resilience in the face of climate variability and change.

Objectives
  • Contribute to the gathering, management, and use of complete spatial information cycles.
  • Leverage spatial information to enhance decision-making and socioeconomic conditions.
  • Strengthen PROSAT through collaboration between OAS and CONAE.
  • Improve forecasting for floods and droughts i.e. resource management, and disaster prevention in the region.

Activities
  • Develop, construct, and launch Earth observation satellites SAOCOM 1A and SAOCOM 1B, supported by ground station infrastructure for data reception, validation, and transfer.
  • Create and implement strategic applications with high impact on agriculture and emergency response (e.g., floods), alongside a Competitive Fund for emerging applications.
  • Support the establishment of the Inter-American Association on Space Matters (AIAME) to enhance regional collaboration.
  • Role of GS/OAS in the Cooperation Agreement with CONAE:
  • Support the technical-administrative management of project activities.
  • Provide CONAE with technical reports on project progress.
  • Present technical execution reports to CONAE.
  • Conduct and present corresponding audits.
