OAS GENERAL ASSEMBLY APPROVES SANTIAGO DECLARATION ON DEMOCRACY

�The Inter-American Democratic Charter constitutes the principal hemispheric benchmark for the promotion and defense of shared democratic principles and values in the Americas at the start of the 21st century,� the hemisphere�s ministers of foreign affairs declared today at the close of the annual session of the OAS General Assembly.

The ministers approved by acclamation the �Declaration of Santiago on Democracy and Public Trust: A New Commitment to Good Governance for the Americas,� which affirms the need to address political, economic and social challenges and to strengthen citizen participation in the democratic process.
